Christopher Hall

My photos from around San Francisco. A way to annoy myself as I struggle with various templates that I don't like and only barely present things the way I want. This latest version has a comments feature which actually works, so relieve my workday tedium and make a comment today.

Hunters Point Naval Shipyard

I had a great trip with a friend yesterday to the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, and got lots and lots of great pics, which I'll post over the next few days. The Navy left the shipyard more than 20 years ago, and has leased space to various groups and artists in the meantime. It's a nasty toxic site, which is slowly being cleaned up. But there's so many photo oppurtunites, it was great to spend an afternoon out there. I can't wait to go again.

Car Thief

Pic from a surveillance camera, this guy broke into my buildings garage recently and stole a suitcase I had stored in the garage. In the scheme of things, I'm lucky, a neighbor's car was broken into and yet another neighbors truck was stolen.

Nap time

Every once in a while, work gets a bit overwhelming. When that happens, I like to sneak off to the local doughnut shop for a quick nap, just like this guy.

The Fog

The fog rolls over Twin Peaks, as it does on so many days here. It took me forever to learn to always have something warm to wear when I was away from my apartment. It gets cold really fast in the afternoon.

Tanya's Beefburger

Tanya's offers some of the tastiest food in San Francisco. I make a point of stopping by for a broiled beefburger whenever I'm in Chinatown. Stop by sometime and tell Tanya I sent you.

Going Home

A photo I took a couple of weeks ago and rediscovered last night. Back in Chinatown again.

San Francisco at dusk

A view of downtown from Bernal Hill. I couldn't decide which pic I liked better, so you get this one also, taken about 10 minutes later:

B of A

Located at California and Kearny Streets. The lower floors and lobby were depicted in the 1974 disaster movie The Towering Inferno. OJ Simpson had a role as a security guard. The movie somehow managed to pull in three Oscars.

480 California Street

One of four Philip Johnson buildings in San Francisco. He allegedly claimed that the faceless figures represent the Board of Supervisors. Bank of America building to the right.

Hobart Building

This was built in 1914 by Willis Polk, and was the tallest building in San Francisco at the time. I really like how the sun catches different details of the exterior in this picture.

Chinatown Walk Continued

Window on a small alley of a Chinatown pharmacy.

Very busy window of the Eastern Bakery on Grant Avenue. If you pause more than a second in front of it, you'll be urged to come inside for a free sample of moon cake.

Doorway to Yee Fung Toy, the Yee family association. There are other branches in several cities in North America.

The "Great Star Theater" on Jackson Street. This is the last Chinese language cinema in Chinatown - at one time there were four of them.

October Walk Through Chinatown

Door and stairs leading to Norra's Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in San Francisco.

This seems to be a fairly busy game room, in the same alley as the office also in this post.

Red lanterns in the street.

This is some sort of office, but I have no idea what. You can hearing the clacking of mahjong tiles from several game rooms up and down the alley where it is located.

Self Diagnosis

Boarding the train, this woman mumbled something I didn't hear. When I said "Pardon me," she mumbled somthing about "a little help" then plopped her suitcase down on my toes. She then pulled this book out, a fairly appropriate title, as it turns out. She continued to mumble to herself throughout the trip. She later moved over to the next seat when another passenger left, which is when I managed to take this picture.

Yet Another Dive Bar

This one is in the Tenderloin. I really like this sign. Not too sure about the bar though...

Federal Building

A shot of the new Federal Building under contruction near 7th and Mission Streets. The building is supposed to be ready early next year, and there's a lot of hype about how much more energy efficient the building will be...more at

The Strand

Now boarded up, I'm wondering whether there are plans to tear this down and build something new. This stretch of Market Street is pretty seedy right now.

Abandoned Roundhouse

Just south of San Francisco in Brisbane, this building used to serve as a locomtive roundhouse for the Southern Pacific. It was part of the Bayshore Yard, which is now a huge empty lot.
